Oh no, not another of those "Windows XP vs Windows Vista vs Windows 7 comparisons" that I've seen at least a thousand times on the Internet.
Well, yes, this is another of those "OMG 7 IS R0XX0RZ ITS SO KICK ASS AND SHIT" articles that I read on every PC magazine, both IRL and on the Internet.
To start with, all of those "comparisons" and "test runs" of people who don't mind building a giant rig for $3000 then using it to test run different operating systems are kinda too good to be true. I have the feeling that those poor writers are just being freedom jacked by Microsoft and are forced to say too many good things so that Windows Seven will sell when it comes out on my birthday.
This is a hijack! Gimme your article, bitch!
I mean, look at it this way. I've been using Windows for more than a decade. It's the first OS I've used since I touched Win95 when I was three years old. The process went on for years, although Windows keeps coming back in different names, like Windows 98, and so on. Of course, I remember that doomsday when my father suddenly decided that Windows ME looks 1337 and awesome. The installer didn't even make any sense, and we were forced to revert back to Windows 98 and lay low for a while. Things rolled smoothly when we built three PCs in 2003 (two of them are now donated to relatives), and installed all of them with Windows XP. It wasn't until 2005 that a virus first hit my computer (I never got the Internet until 2004), maybe it's because I was using IE6. After long years with XP, we built another three PCs (the rigs we flaunt today), and installed each of them with Windows Vista Home Premium.
Now I'm not entirely pissed with Vista. I think I'm advice people this: "If your computer sucks, don't botter Vista'ing it". If you don't have multiple cores or a good GPU, don't go Aero. For me, I have Aero and the Sidebar on and I rarely get any interface freezes and crashes. Also, UAC is never bothering me at all since I turned it off. It's pretty useless anyway.
Ok, enough about my story, let's go and compare the three OS's. *drumroll*
Windows XP
Pros
- Faster than any of the two other Windows versions
- Simple interface
- You can still run programs that are prior to Windows 95
- Uses way less memory than Vista and 7
- Can be installed on netbooks or underpowered computers
Cons
- No support from Microsoft now. They killed XP already.
- DirectX 10 games have less or no support for XP.
- Not so good driver support for your hardware.
- Very insecure against threats, even with the best AV
- Little support for multi-threaded applications and multicore CPUs
Windows Vista
Pros
- Holy shit AERO!
- Search function.
- Better driver support than XP
- Fully supports DX10
- More support for multi-threaded CPUs
Cons
- Feels more like XP, only with more eye candy
- UAC
- The whole interface is slow
- Uses too much system resources
Windows 7
Pros
- Faster boot ups
- More support for upcoming DX11
- Gives more control over multi-core processes and processors
- More support for hardware drivers
- The interface is much much more organized
- More shortcut gestures for more productivity
- Better search
- Useless core features like Movie Maker are removed
- Fully supports tablets and touch screens
- UAC is moderated and can be personalized
- Since this is a new OS, Microsoft will probably prioritize on the support of Windows 7.
Cons
- You have to buy another OS again just to try it. Maybe I'll just go 7 when I buy a new laptop.
- Little or no support for applications made prior Windows 98. However Windows 7 Professional/Enterprise/Ultimate's feature, a mini XP app that runs Win XP in the background, can be used as a workaround
- Another OS, and Windows XP is being buried further. I wonder if most Pinoys in the computer shops will ever realize that Windows XP is dead and shit.
So, if we sum it all up, we can be proud to say that XP is shit, Vista is shit, and Windows 7 is gonna be awesome. I have doubts, but let's give Microsoft a chance.

From top to bottom: Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Seven.
